Let's Go Camping

This past weekend marked our first short trip out of the big city and into the peaceful woods of the Shenandoah National Park. We packed up early Saturday morning and haphazardly made the 2-hour trip to find some solace among the flora and fauna of Virginia.
Instead, Bert pushed sticks into the fire with his head all night (see picture) and someone apparently had a heart attack while we were hiking back up a trail to our campsite. We got back in time to see five emergency response vehicles make their way closer to the patient, only to get themselves jammed in to the point of difficult turnaround. These members of the ever growing response team waited around for a while instructing other eager rescuers to avoid going down the trail in their vehicle due to the surplus of oversized machines already on the trail. While the rescuers were gathering a group of seemingly domestic deer approached the campsite across from ours to see if any food had been carelessly left out. A bear was supposedly also monitoring the perimeter, but we did not see any signs of Yogi or Boo Boo. As far as we know, no one died, or at least the rescuers made it appear that no one had died.
We met some nice people who brought us a bottle of wine from their long trip back into town.
For their efforts, they were given a nice cold bottle of tasty homebrew and a Hamilton. Our camp neighbors on the other side of us were headed to NC to do some kayaking and such. Their Jetta was meticulously packed and loaded with three kayaks on the roof and three mountain backs hanging off the trunk. We were talking to them as they were packing up in the morning and wished them well before realizing they had forgotten their tent. It was only a little tent used for changing, but it was there and they were clearly gone. We told the women at the ranger station and one assured us they would wait until noon to see if the campers come back and then bring it to the ranger headquarters. Not sure what was going to take place at that point (i.e. I want it, no I want it)
Good times.

  • How kind of you, that homebrew IS tasty. Thank god I flew home with mine when I did and got to pour it into a pint glass instead of a trash bin.
